Victor Wanyama’s from rags to riches story
That current Kenya captain Victor Wanyama could once in a while, be faced with personal challenges, just like the most of us, could possibly pass as a fact.
However, is unlike the average Kenyan, cash – or the lack of it – is highly unlikely to feature in Wanyama’s challenges list.
Born and bred in the sprawling low class Muthurwa estate just outside Nairobi’s CBD, Wanyama was probably considered “unfortunate” to have been born in this part of the world not quite considered a “footballing nation”, based on the national team’s performances and talented players who feature in top leagues around the world.
But the player, currently plying his trade for Southampton in the English Premier League, has risen above his unprivileged background to become one of the finest midfielders in the world.
MONTHLY SALARY
This achievement has come along with a new social status as the highest earning sports person in East Africa, thanks to his monthly take home pay in the region of Sh 16 million.
Wanyama – who is the younger sibling to another football star MacDonald Mariga – is also one of the highest earning sportsmen in the country at the moment.
With such background, it is easy to understand why most of Big Vic’s reported expenditure, including his reported USD 1,000 (Sh 90,000) bill for his ex-girlfriend Victoria Kimani’s hair in London, is on the higher side compared to that of the ordinary mwananchi.
