Wahu – Day I almost committed suicide because of depression

Musician Rosemary Wahu Kagwi, popularly known as Wahu, has opened up on her difficult past as a teenager, admitting that she once considered committing suicide due to depression.

In a lengthy emotional post on Facebook, the “Sweet Love” singer also encouraged the youth facing challenges not to be discouraged by the “negative whispers”.

“When I was 19, I suffered from depression. I thought life was meaningless. I thought I was such a failure and a massive disappointment to my parents. I wanted to do myself (and the world) a favour and just die.

“I remember walking past my dad’s medicine cabinet and just thinking how easy it would be to just “end this”, Wahu explained.

Wahu, is also a successful fashion model, actress and entrepreneur, added that her current achievements are enough to portray the “devil as a liar”.

She said: “Looking back now all I can say is the devil is a liar!! Look at ALL what he didn’t want me to enjoy! A career that I love, a family I adore, and an opportunity to encourage so many young people. Don’t believe the negative whispers that sink you into depression,”

Some of the successes Wahu has enjoyed include winning several music awards such as the best female artist at the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2008 and Best reggae song at the Tanzania music awards in 2010.

Her tracks have also been nominated to such prestigious awards like the Channel O music Video Awards, Kora Awards and Pearl of Africa Music Awards.

Wahu is happily married to fellow musician Nameless with whom she has two daughters.
