Wangeci goes ballistic over Tecno’s use of her image, video in advert

Kenyan female rapper Wangeci has gone bare knuckle on mobile firm Tecno for using her photo and video in a campaign without her consent.

The rapper uploaded a video on Facebook on Wednesday detailing how the firm uploaded her video on social media in June prompting her management to approach the firm.

“They used my image and likeness in the form of an advertisement which came across as an endorsement of the product. They did not seek my approval or consent for it neither did they pay for the use of my image and likeness. After 8 weeks of legal conversation they went silent and deleted all images and videos associated with me,” wrote Wangeci.

DEMANDING PAYMENT

The rapper is now demanding payment from the firm as she says as an artiste her image and likeness is a brand through which she earns a living.

“As an artiste our image and likeness is our source of livelihood it is our bread and butter. It is not okay to misuse and take away from us when we work so hard to build ourselves.#payartists #respectartists #tecnocomeclean,” she added.

In the video, she uploaded screenshots of the Facebook and Twitter posts on the official Tecno Mobile page that showed her video as part of a campaign to have video entries for a competition.

One of the posts with a video of Wangeci read, “We are loving the entries so far. Keep them coming…”
