Wanted gangster killed by undercover cop posing as ‘mali mali’ trader in Ruai

Detectives on Wednesday gunned down a wanted gangster in Githunguri, Ruai area and recovered a pistol that was robbed from a civilian firearm holder a week ago.

One of the detectives based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Starehe went undercover as a mali mali trader to nab the gangster.

According to DCI, they received intelligence that the thug identified as Paul Muriithi Naomi alias Muruthi was in the neighbourhood and one of the detectives posed as a trader while carrying some basins and laundry baskets and knocked at his door and inquired if he wanted to trade.

Once they ascertained it was him, they went back and introduced themselves but instead, Muruthi started shooting at them through the window.

“But he instead responded with fire, shooting at the officers from a window. A shootout then ensued as the detectives responded to the provocation with precision,” DCI said.

Police recovered a Ceska pistol serial number B 681256 loaded with four rounds of 9mm calibre, while 11 spent cartridges were also recovered at the scene.

Last month, a bicycle-riding undercover officer killed a suspected gangster who had been attacking and robbing pedestrians in Jamhuri estate, Nairobi.

Two officers decided to leave their colleagues behind and laid an ambush while riding a bicycle after members of the public raised an alarm that there was a gang of three who were terrorising members of the public in the area.

When police were alerted they laid an ambush while riding a bicycle near Jamhuri Cemetery, Nairobi.

Two of the officers left their colleague on foot in the same area they had been informed the attacks were happening while on a fact-finding mission.

Police said it was then that a gang emerged from a thicket and attacked the officer on foot, mugging him and throwing him to the ground.

He raised alarm and his colleagues who were meters away on the bicycle rushed back and shot dead one of the attackers as his accomplices escaped.
