Wanyama takes time off

Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama says he needs some rest before assuming national team duty in the coming days.

The Southampton midfielder arrived in the country from his European base on Wednesday morning for a six week holiday, days after the lapse of the 2014/2015 English Premier League season.

“I thank all football fans in Kenya for the support and congratulatory messages you have given me through the season. I need a few days rest and will then link up with the national team to prepare for the assignment against Congo (Brazzaville). I pray we begin the qualifiers on a winning note,” Wanyama told Nairobi News.

Kenya is set to play the central African nation away, in the opening clash of the 2017 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers in a few weeks time.

Wanyama could in the meantime not be drawn to comment on the several rumours linking him with a move away from the Saints this summer.

Wanyama, 23, was instrumental in his side’s seventh place finish in the English top flight league last term.

He won the EPL African player of the month award in September, was voted Goal Kenyan footballer of the year and also claimed the Presidents award from his club last week.
