We shall pay you for recording those littering in public – Sakaja

By Wangu Kanuri November 3rd, 2022 2 min read

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced that Nairobi County will pay people who capture those littering the public.

Making the announcement on his social media platforms, Sakaja said, “As we unclog the drainage system throughout the city, let’s kindly desist from further illegal dumping.

Ukiona mtu akidump and you record, mulika kabisa; we arrest, prosecute and split the fine. Will work on the county law to provide for this. Let’s keep our city clean.”

Sakaja has been keen on ensuring Nairobi is back to its cleanliness after it had become a filthy state for quite some time.

With the lanes that pedestrians were using as shortcuts to connect them from one street to another being an eye sore, drainages in Nairobi were not any better with dirt, litter, and garbage filling the water passways to the brim with it not only being an ugly site but also emitting stench.

Additionally, litter bins that were strategically placed are now missing, and the few available ones are far between. Even for the few ones available, some are faulty.

Barely two days after being sworn in as the Nairobi governor, Sakaja, in the company of his deputy James Muchiri toured various parts of the city with him reassuring, “I have given firm directives which will ensure resolving the current garbage problem across the city in the next few days.

We want to see a city of order, dignity, hope and opportunity for all.”

In his manifesto dubbed ‘Let’s make Nairobi work,’ Sakaja had underscored his plans for managing garbage as a key priority to ensure dignity is restored in the county.

Under keeping the city clean 10-fold segment, Sakaja promised to implement e-waste handling, disposal of waste, and dealing swiftly with corruption and conflict of interest in the waste management sector.

Among the ways he said would be used by his administration is developing water infrastructure by unblocking water and sewerage projects as well as addressing the distribution of water in underserved and non-served areas.
