Westgate: Refugees arrested

Mbotela.

Police have arrested 90 illegal immigrants in Nairobi in a crackdown that began three days ago.

The refugees, most of whom were arrested in the CBD and in some estates, are in custody in different police stations.

They are expected to appear in court in different days of this week.

Drug barons and terrorists

Nairobi Police boss Benson Kibui said the crackdown on illegal refugees came in the wake of last week’s terrorist attack at  Westgate Mall.

He said the operation will continue until all those staying in the country illegally are arrested and charged.

“Most of those we arrested were in Eastleigh, Mbotela, Kibera and other Estates. They were mostly of Somali and Ethiopian origin,” he said.

Mr Kibui said some entered the country and registered as refugees but illegally left their camps and made their way to Nairobi.

“Some of them came to visit their relatives and conduct businesses here. Of course, there are those who are in the country to engage in terror activities. Others are here as drug barons. We are determined to arrest them all,” Mr Kibui said.

The Police Chief asked the public to collaborate with authorities by giving information concerning criminal gangs.
