Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi hints on shifting his political base to Bungoma

The Member of Parliament for Westlands Constituency, Tim Wanyonyi, has hinted that he could shift his political base to Bungoma County in the next General Election.

Mr Wanyonyi dropped the hint while speaking in Sirisia Constituency during the launch of the Sirisia NG-CDF tournament at Namwela Boys’ Primary.

“Mimi ni mzaliwa wa hapa Bungoma lakini nafanya kazi huko Westlands kama mbunge, nikirudi hapa Bungoma kuwaomba mniunge mkono kuwa kiongozi msinikatae (I was born here in Bungoma but I represent the people of Westlands in Parliament. If I come back to Bungoma, to be your leader, I am pleading with you to support me),” Wanyonyi said.

However, Mr Wanyonyi stopped short of stating which seat he could be eyeing in the 2027 polls.

During last year’s General Election, the third-term MP, shelved his ambition to run for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat after Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition’s top leadership handpicked Polycarp Igathe to carry the political outfit’s flag in that contest.

Mr Wanyonyi is the younger brother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, but during the last General Election the two ran for political office in opposing camps. While Wanyonyi ran for his current seat on an ODM ticket under the Raila Odinga-led Azimio, Wetangula contested and won the Bungoma Senatorial seat on a Ford Kenya ticket under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance umbrella.

Shortly after being elected senator, Wetangula resigned from the position to seek election as Speaker of the National Assembly, a seat he eventually won.

“Currently our schools are getting little support from the government. I want to appeal to the CS ,who is our own son, to support and nurture talent in schools,” he said.

Mr Wanyonyi was first elected as a councilor in the defunct Nairobi City Council in during the 2007 General Election. In 2013, he was elected the MP for Westlands and he defended the seat in the 2017 and 2022 polls.
