Westlands MP Wanyonyi declares Nairobi County Nasa’s stronghold
Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi has exuded confidence that the Opposition will clinch most elective seats in Nairobi County.
Addressing journalists after receiving his clearance certificate from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday, Mr Wanyonyi said that Nairobi County is not a battle zone as has been peddled by Jubilee Party and that the National Super Alliance (Nasa) is more popular in the city.
“The journey has started and I urge our supporters that we walk together. I’m ready and I have been given the clearance to defend my seat. Our presidential candidate Mr (Raila) Odinga has also been cleared same as Governor (Evans) Kidero.
“Let us not sleep with our votes but come out in numbers on August 8 and ensure we win the presidency, the governorship seat, senatorial, woman representative and most member of county assembly seats in Nairobi,” said Mr Wanyonyi.
At the same time, Amani National Congress candidate for the Westlands constituency, Mr Walji Ashif, has allayed fears that his candidature might lead to split votes and give the seat to Jubilee Party.
“Westlands is a Nasa zone and we are not afraid of splitting the votes even if we share the votes, either I or Mr Wanyonyi will still win. We have 145,000 registered voters while Jubilee Party only has 30,000 registered voters,” said Mr Ashif.
Mr Ashif, who has unsuccessfully contested for the seat three times, said that he was optimistic that his fourth stab will be fourth time lucky.
He also urged voters in the constituency to shun tribalism and only vote in leaders based on their competence.
“I think we have not had good leaders in Westlands. We still have high levels of poverty and the Constituency Development Fund has not been used in the right manner,” he said.
