WhatsApp fined Sh339 million for sharing data with Facebook
WhatsApp has been fined 3million Euros (Sh339 million) for sharing data with its parent company Facebook.
In a ruling made in Italy Friday, Italian competition watchdog said WhatsApp had insinuated to its users that they would not use the service unless they agree to share their information to Facebook.
The information was contained in the terms and conditions of the new WhatsApp upgrade.
DATA PROTECTION
The mobile app has stated that it would review the ruling and will continue working with the authorities.
All 28 European Union data protection authorities asked WhatsApp last year to stop sharing users’ data with Facebook due to doubts over the validity of users’ consent.
When the investigation was opened six months ago, at the same time as the EU request, a WhatsApp spokeswoman said the company was working with data protection authorities to address their questions, and was committed to respecting the law.
