WhatsApp launches enhanced voice chat for larger groups

WhatsApp has officially launched an upgraded voice chat feature tailored for larger groups.

This new functionality enables users to engage in live conversations with sizable groups more seamlessly.

In contrast to the existing 32-participant limit, the enhanced feature now supports group calls ranging from 33 to 128 participants.

Unlike the conventional approach where each group member is individually alerted when a voice chat begins, the novel feature employs a more discreet method.

Users receive a silent notification and have the liberty to join the voice chat at their convenience. The messaging company, in a statement released on X, emphasized that users can now opt to have real-time conversations with whomever they choose.

“Now available: voice chats for your larger groups! Soon, you can have live discussions with anyone who can join or continue texting with those who can’t,” WhatsApp asserts that the updated feature is less disruptive for individuals managing busy schedules or those who prefer not to be disturbed.

Moreover, the new voice chat feature facilitates easy entry and exit from conversations as needed.

However, it’s important to note that the voice chat feature is exclusive to groups with 33 or more participants. Users can initiate a voice chat within a group by tapping the top right corner of the screen and selecting “Start Voice Chat.” If a user needs to step away momentarily from a meeting or any other commitment, they can simply tap the chat bubble to exit the voice chat. When ready to rejoin, tapping the chat bubble again facilitates a seamless return, resembling the functionality seen in Discord’s voice chat.

Controls for the voice chat are conveniently located at the top of the group chat, allowing users to continue messaging while the voice chat is ongoing. To commence a group voice chat, users need to navigate to the desired group chat. If the group consists of 33 or more participants, selecting “Group call,” choosing contacts and tapping “Voice call” initiates the process. In cases where a group has 32 or fewer participants, users can tap “Voice call” and confirm their decision to start the voice chat.
