Why Kidero sacked his embattled finance chiefs

City Hall’s chief finance officer Jimmy Kiamba and head of accounting Stephen Osiro were on Monday fired for neglect of duties.

Mr Kiamba’s termination letter dated July 13 and signed by Finance Executive Gregory Mwakanongo indicated that Mr Kiamba failed to offer a satisfactory response on why he should continue being the county’s head of finances.

The head of accounting, Stephen Osiro, was also fired in what was also indicated as ‘neglect to perform duties and responsibilities’.

His termination letter was signed by county public service board chairman Philip Kung’u.

The county government had sent a ‘show cause’ letter to Mr Kiamba on July 3 to which he responded on July 10.

Mr Kiamba is locked in a court battle with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations that he used his position to enrich himself.

The anti-graft agency claims that Mr Kiamba lives too large for his modest monthly salary of Sh85,000 and that he has built vast business empire through fraudulent deals using his position.

“It has therefore been determined that you wilfully neglected to perform your duties and responsibilities as chief officer, Finance and Economic Planning. In view of the foregoing…it has been decided to terminate your employment contract with Nairobi City county government effective today,” read the letter.

The termination letter did not, however, disclose the specific issues Mr Kiamba had been asked to respond to.
