Why KOT cannot believe Moi is ‘citizen number 1’
Could it be true that retired President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi is the holder of the first national identity card? That is the question that Kenyans on Twitter are asking them after details of the former president were revealed.
The revelation came to light during protests by United States International University (USIU) students over alleged grabbing of the institution’s land.
On Tuesday, USIU students held a peaceful demonstration over the sale of an eight-hectare (20-acre) parcel in up-market Muthaiga North Estate which the institution claims to own.
KOT’s REACTION
USIU Vice Chancellor Paul Tiyambe Zeleza made public documents of the university which indicated the land was purchased by Mr Moi.
Wit the documents showing that the former president’s ID is registered as 0000001, the burning question on social media was how Mr Moi managed to secure the number.
Still, others tried to clarify that as the Head of the State at the time, Mr Moi was entitled to be the first to be issued with an ID, hence the number.
Here are some of the reactions from Kenyans on Twitter over this new development:
