Why Police arrested Bunge la Mwananchi president Calvince Gaucho

Bunge la Mwananchi president Calvince Okoth alias Gaucho has been released without charge after spending 24 hours in custody.

The outspoken politician’s freedom comes a few hours after Azimio la Umoja One Kenya bigwigs demand his release by end of business on May 24, 2023.

Gaucho was held by police officer at Muthangari Police station following his arrest on May 23, 2023.

Speaking to Nairobi News after his release, the aspiring politician wondered why police arrested him as he was heading to Nation Media Group for an interview with this website.

“I went to Central to pick my phones that were taken the last time I was arrested. But when I entered one of the offices, the officers said that there were some people looking for me. At first I thought it was a joke but later on, seven people came and picked me saying they were looking for me,” he said.

“They took my phone before I called Babu Owino and switched it off. They have not told me why they arrested me.”

Reacting to his arrest, Former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa warned the sgovernment to stop intimidating Kenyans.

“They have started targeting and arresting Azimio supporters. We had a young man referred to as Gaucho one that my successor said was a lowly person and should not be seen with great leaders. These are the real hustlers who are taken for a ride by the hustlers in government,” he said.

Wamalwa claimed Gaucho’s arrest was meant to intimidate him after he made a hard hitting statement at Jubilee’s National Delegates Conference in Nairobi on May 23, 2023.

The former CS vowed to ensure Gaucho’s unconditional release.

The former CS further criticised the move by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to label ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga as a wanted man.

Njenga presented himself at the Nakuru law courts on May 23, 2023 amid reports police were looking for him.

Gaucho who has admitted he harbours ambition of contesting for the Langata parliamentary seat in 2027, has been arrested on a number of occasions in the past three months.

He has been linked to Azimio leader Raila Odinga and is believed to be among the people who assist in mobilising supporters for the anti-government protests.
