How seven campuses in city centre escaped closure
Seven out of eight university campuses that were facing closure got a reprieve after they were given more time to address illegalities regarding their location.
The campuses now have 12 months, from July 31, to ensure they provide a conducive environment for learning.
This includes moving from bus parks and having essential facilities such as libraries as required by the Universities Act 2012.
Commission for University (CUE) Chairman Prof Henry Thairu said failure by a universities to comply with the stipulations will result in closure of the campuses.
The campuses got the reprieve from Commission Appeals Committee after they challenged the decision of the Commission for University Education to shut them down in six months from June this year.
CUE had given the eight satellite campuses located in Nairobi, six months from June 18 to operate with the regulations or face closure.
The campuses that appealed include St Paul’s University, Egerton University, Africa Nazarene University, South Eastern Kenya University and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Multi-Media University of Kenya and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
However, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology did not appeal the decision.
The university is relocating its campus.
