American Hollywood actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been leading separate lives for the past seven years, as revealed by Jada Pinkett Smith in her latest memoir, “Worthy.”

The 52-year-old actress shed light on the status of their relationship, explaining that while they haven’t gone through a legal divorce, the romantic aspect of their partnership has dissolved.

Despite this, Jada made it clear that there are no intentions of seeking a formal divorce. She stated, “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”

However, the couple is, in fact, living separately. This separation has been in effect for several years, and it was an arrangement that existed before the infamous incident at the Oscars in which Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, a shocking moment that garnered international attention.

In a separate interview with People Magazine, Jada Pinkett Smith shared her perspective on the Oscars slap incident that led to Will Smith’s ban from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a decade.

She revealed that, like many viewers, she initially believed the altercation was part of a scripted comedy routine.

She remarked, “I thought, ‘This is a skit.’ I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until her husband returned to his seat that she realised it was not a skit.

After the awards show, Jada Pinkett Smith had a private conversation with her husband about the incident, assuring him of her support while also acknowledging that he needed to navigate the situation on his own.

She mentioned, “I’m going to be by his side, but also allow him to have to figure this out for himself.”

Regarding the current state of their marriage, Jada Pinkett Smith admitted that they are still in the process of working things out.

She emphasized the deep love they share for each other and their determination to determine what their unique relationship will look like moving forward.

In the wake of the Oscar incident, Will Smith took responsibility for his actions, resigning from the Academy’s board and accepting the 10-year ban from all Academy events, including the Oscars.

He acknowledged the breach of trust and expressed regret for depriving other nominees and winners of their moment to celebrate their outstanding contributions to the film industry.

The couple, who originally tied the knot in Baltimore in December 1997, has two adult children together, Jaden and Willow, in addition to Will Smith’s son Trey from a previous marriage.
