A mother has been charged with selling her three-day-old baby for Sh20,000.

Ms Agnes Mueni was charged alongside Ruth Mueni for selling  the baby named “Blessings Mutindi” to Stella Cherono on December, 18 at Sinai slum.

Ruth is accused of assisting her to sell the child. The pair was arrested in a sting operation by NairobiNews, NTV and the police last week on Wednesday.

She had advertised the sale on Facebook through an intermediary who is on the run and asked for Sh1,000 to dispose of the baby.

The prosecutor, Mr Isaiah Oyoo, said Agnes sold the child to raise money for rent, food and upkeep of her older child who is four.

“She has stated that she is not able to raise her two children and wanted to sell the child to a  willing buyer who would raise the child in a good condition,” he said.

The two women however denied the charges and were released on a Sh50,000 bond each.

They could not raise the amount and were remanded at Langata Women’s Prison and the two children taken to Mama Ngina Children’s Home.

The case will be mentioned on January 3 and heard on January.
