Police are holding a woman at Kasarani Police Station for allegedly conning Kenyans in exchange for job opportunities at the Sonko Rescue Team.

The Kasarani OCPD Robinson Mboloi, who confirmed the incident said that the woman was arrested in Zimmerman, Nairobi County and will be arraigned in court on Friday.

Tabitha Njeri Wanjiru had registered over 500 youths in different parts of the city with a promise to secure jobs for them at the Sonko Rescue Team.

Speaking to Nairobi News, Joab Ogolla, who manages the Sonko Rescue Team, said Ms Njeri started the exercise on Tuesday in Umoja registering over 257 youth each of whom was required to pay Sh1,500 then moved to Soweto in Kayole.

EXTORTIONIST

“Ms Njeri has been purporting to work for the governor and has been walking in some of the ward administrators offices threatening to hire and fire anyone if they do not allow her to register the youths from their offices,”said Mr Ogolla.

He added that on Wednesday she had taken her extortionist schemes to Roysambu when they laid a trap for her.

Mr Ogolla said that they were informed of the suspect’s whereabouts by the public and they responded by sending police officers to arrest her.

Ms Njeri had also sent a text message that was circulated in the social media that Sonko Rescue Team was hiring youth and that they should report to the nearest ward offices.

IN CUSTODY

“If you know any Youth in Nbi who is interested in working with Team Sonko as a cleaner kindly inform him/her to register at the County ward office immediately salary is 15,000/month and only ID card needed,” read the said message.

Zimmerman MCA elect Pius Mwaura said that on Wednesday Ms Njeri collected over 60 names in his area and was in the process of registering more when she was caught.

Mr Mwaura said that the youths had been informed that the money was for uniforms and they would be paid a monthly salary of Sh 15,000.

Efforts to reach Kasarani Police boss were futile as he was in a meeting. However, a video of the suspect in police custody was widely shared in the social media.
