Woman who hosted son’s alcohol party released on bond

A woman accused of serving alcohol to minors at her house in Phenom Estate, Lang’ata area, has been released on bond.

Mary Nanyuk, South Sudanese citizen and wife to a top military general in the volatile country, was ordered to deposit a Sh500,000 bond with two Kenyan sureties or pay a Sh100,000 cash bail.

She was also ordered to deposit her passport in court.

A second count of being in Kenya illegally seems to have hit a wall after prosecution said she has a valid visa.

On Monday Lang’ata police boss told the court that he released Ms Nanyuk from custody after it emerged she was the wife of a senior military general in South Sudan.

The court reprimanded him for releasing the suspect without a court order and she was remanded at Lang’ata women prison.

Summons for the OCS to appear in court Thursday were cancelled and the case scheduled for hearing on May 11.

Police had initially suspected the party to be part of the banned Project X party.

Ms Nanyuk is said to have hosted the party to celebrate her son’s performance in the Kenya Certificate Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

About 106 youths, some as young as 16 years, were arrested in the house party held in the estate located near Carnivore Restaurant.
