Woman survives suicide attempt after killing child

A 33-year-old housewife is undergoing treatment at St Mary’s hospital in Gilgil following a failed suicide attempt.

This occurred moments after she reportedly killed her six-month-old baby.

The woman, said to be mentally unstable, stabbed the minor several times on Saturday at the Teachers estate, before attempting to kill herself.

Gilgil police boss Sarah Koki said the woman later attempted to take her life but was saved by neighbors. “She was rushed to the privately owned facility where she is undergoing treatment under police watch,” she said.

The officer commanding police division said the woman sustained injuries on the neck after stabbing herself.

Prior to the incident, the woman is said to have started exhibiting strange behavior after giving birth to the second born child.

She was under constant watch from relatives until the tragic Saturday when she was left alone in the house.

Ms Koki said police were waiting for the medical report to ascertain whether the mother of one was having any mental illness.

“We have been briefed on the history, but we will rely on the medical report from medics to establish whether the woman will be arraigned in court,” said the Gilgil police boss.

Sources said the woman was responding well to treatment, with police monitoring her progress.

The incident occurred barely a fortnight after a man said to be mentally unstable butchered his pregnant wife, just hours after he was treated at a local dispensary and discharged.
The wife was staying at her in- laws house in Kikopey, Gilgil after she visited the family of three days earlier.
