Woman who threw baby into Indian Ocean detained for 7 days
A Mombasa court has granted police officers seven days to detain the woman who allegedly threw her infant into the Indian Ocean, pending ongoing investigations into the shocking incident.
The court’s decision follows an application by the prosecution, where the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution sought 14 days to hold Ms Beatrice Wakio, the mother of the child, as investigations unfold.
The prosecution argued that the extended detention period was necessary to assist the Investigating Officer in thoroughly examining the case of attempted murder involving the 8-month-old baby.
Police Constable Allan Kirago, in an affidavit, also mentioned the pending medical report from doctors, which could provide crucial evidence for the case.
However, Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku questioned the need for 14 days and opted to grant officers seven days specifically for conducting the medical report for the suspect.
The prosecution informed the court that the infant is currently admitted and receiving medical attention at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH).
The horrifying incident allegedly occurred at Mombasa County’s Likoni Ferry on Sunday when the suspect reportedly threw her 8-month-old baby into the Indian Ocean.
The court proceedings will resume after the allotted seven days for further decisions based on the ongoing investigations.
