Wrangling Nairobi Jubilee MCAs now make up
Jubilee allied members of Nairobi County Assembly have come out to dismiss claims that there is division between them and the executive wing of the county.
This comes after reports emerged that the Jubilee MCAs had split into two groups with one supporting Governor Mike Sonko’s administration while the other opposed to it, leading to two members of the party being de-whipped from their committee leadership positions last month.
Led by Assembly Majority Leader and Matopeni MCA Abdi Guyo and Chief Whip Chege Mwaura, the over 60 members refuted claims that they have been singing a different tune to that of Governor Sonko.
The MCAs said they have only been fighting cartels that were in operation during governor Evans Kidero’s regime and were angling to get a way back into Sonko’s administration to abet corruption and pilfer public funds.
“We are one and we will continue to support Sonko. But I will continue being very firm with Kidero’s cartels who are hellbent on pilfering money from the county,” Mr Guyo said on Thursday.
Mr Mwaura echoed his party leader’s position saying that their support for both Sonko and President Uhuru Kenyatta was intact and that an oversight exercise should not be misconstrued as opposing the governor and his administration.
CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES
“Our support for Sonko and President Kenyatta is intact and any oversight will be done within the law and not otherwise,” said the Ngara Ward MCA.
At the same time, the MCAs also showed solidarity with Mr Guyo over allegations that he has been funding criminal activities, including terrorism, in the city and engaging in sexual affairs with female MCAs in the county.
“We are disturbed by the personal attacks on our majority leader. Attack on any member here is an attack on all of us. The media should not involve itself in critical issues that are not verifiable,” said Mr Mwaura.
The sentiments were shared by deputy speaker John Kamangu Nyumu who said: “Whoever has a personal issue with Guyo should face him personally and not do it in the press. We are all behind him and he has never been involved with Al-Shabaab.”
Mr Guyo also denied the claims, saying the false reports must have come from cartels holding the county at ransom with the aim of having him relent on his fight against corruption.
“Assassinating my character will not make me relent,” he said.
On Wednesday, the majority leader said before the County Assembly that his woes began a fortnight ago when the involvement of former Kamukunji MP Simon Mbugua in the affairs of City Hall was discussed before the House leading to a fight back from the EALA legislator.
