Yego blasts Sports Kenya over misuse of stadium during Safaricom event

By DAVID KWALIMWA February 23rd, 2016 1 min read

Javelin gold medalist Julius Yego was a disappointed man Tuesday morning when he showed up for training and found the ground littered with trash from a musical event last weekend.

The “YouTube athlete” blasted local sports authorities for what he suggests is the “use of sports facilities for other functions”.

Yego, in a rant on his Facebook page on Tuesday morning, also described as “shameful” a decision by the Kasarani Stadium management to use the tartan track – which is fully dedicated to sporting purposes – for staging events.

KILLING TALENTS

The SOYA award winner said: “It’s so shameful, imagine this is the warm up area Kasarani stadium, (and we have) beer, water and all sorts of plastics and broken glasses everywhere. It’s killing talents we pretend to support.

“The Ministry of Sports are sleeping people, how can you allow a big function be staged inside a stadium worse in a tartan track and you raise a tent on it, shame on you,” he added.

WRONG PRIORITIES

Sports Kenya have in the past been under the spotlight for prioritising political and corporate events over sporting functions.

This past weekend for example, the venue played host to Jazz Festival sponsored by Safaricom.

Sports Kenya CEO Gabriel Komora wasn’t available for comment.
