Are you a sports personality and how effectively do use your social media platform? Well, the Kenya Social Media Awards (Soma) in partnership with OLX will be awarding such sports people at a gala night on Friday at the Safari Park Hotel.

The award now in its fourth edition, but incorporating sports category for the first time, recognizes and rewards brands that use social media to transform lives.

The public nominates their preferred personalities through online voting on the organization’s portal (soma.or.ke), while judges make the call on who qualifies for the shortlist of five based on the content of their posts, reach effectiveness, and the number of platforms they  use. Those who make the shortlist are then subjected to another round of voting by the public for the eventual prize.

The 2016 Olympics javelin silver medalist Julius Yego, decorated marathoner Lorna Kiplagat, 800m double Olympics champion David Rudisha, rugby star Collins Injera and 5,000m Olympics champion Vivian Cheruiyot will battle for the honours in the Sports Personality category while AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia, Mwamba RFC, Kenya Riders Downunder and Kenya 7s will fight it out in the club’s category.

Speaking to Daily Nation Sport, Soma founder Martin Muli said that even though the award does not come with a cash prize, winning is a bonus for the athletes as it enables them to build on their  brands.

“The winners stand to get an opportunity to build their already expanding niche and with that, the chance to earn endorsements from different products or from corporates,” Muli said.

Besides sports personalities and sports clubs, corporates, leaders, educational institutions, and media personalities who effectively use their social media platforms will also be feted.
