Nairobi residents need not worry about security as they usher in the New Year, county police boss has said.

Nairobi Police Commandant Benson Kibue has, at the same time, asked matatus to ensure safety by frisking travellers and their luggage with functioning metal detectors to deter terrorists.

In a statement to newsrooms, Mr Kibue said police were keeping a keen eye on vital installations like shopping malls and churches.

Taken extra measures

“We have taken extra measures in vital installation like shopping malls and we are calling for co-operation from the public,” he said.

While noting that churches had become soft targets for terrorists, Mr Kibue assured Christians that their places of worship would be properly secured.

Thousands of Nairobians throng churches to usher in the New Year on Tuesday night and hold overnight prayers and celebrations popularly referred to as kesha (night vigils).

Mr Kibue said more police officers were patrolling city streets and estates while those who were on leave had been recalled to beef up security.

The city has been attacked several times this year.
