You will ‘know’ when you’re dead, new research proves

Picture yourself lying on a hospital bed listening to doctors announcing to your relatives that you are dead.

Thereafter, and while you are still in your helpless form, picture your loved ones screaming and mourning your demise.

Scary as it may seem, there is every possibility that this is, indeed, true as scientists researching at the Stony Brook University of Medicine in New York are now convinced that a deceased person knows that he or she is dead.

According to the Daily Mail, these researchers believe the human brain still functions for a few seconds – or even minutes – after the heart stops beating.

Doctors mainly rely on the heartbeat and pulses to ascertain whether a human being is alive or dead.

So the experts believe that even as the heart stops beating and doctors pronounce you dead, the deceased will be fully aware of what was happening to them as their consciousness keeps working.

According to the research, for a short time after death, the person would be ‘trapped’ inside the dead body with the brain still functioning.

The best example is that of survivors of heart attacks, who were well aware of what was going on around them while they were clinically ‘dead’ before being ‘brought back to life’ and could describe what was happening around them after their hearts stopped beating, the new study revealed.

Sr Sam Parnia arrived at this conclusion by examining cases of consciousness after death by researching cardiac arrest cases in Europe and the US.
