Youths protest at lack of bumps on road

Hundreds of youths in Rongai on Thursday demonstrated over the lack of bumps on Namanga highway terming it a death trap.

This is after four people died on the road early in the week in separate incidents and two others suffered broken limbs.

Earlier, a public service vehicle driver died on Saturday night by a hit and run driver.

The road extending from Athi River through Kitengela has no bumps except at Isinya, Ilbisil and Kajiado towns. Residents at Kumpa trading centre recently protested over the increased accidents and later erected make shift bumps using murram and gravel.

The protesting youths yesterday sat in the middle of the road at Kitengela town and made a five-minute prayer at the point where the vehicle hit and killed the PSV driver.

Movement of vehicles was interrupted causing a snarl-up as the administration police officers, prison wardens and regular police were on stand-by to quell violence.

“At least two lives a lost every week on this road on the government’s watch,” said the Isinya youth leader Bob Njagi.
