Zuku to expand basketball league

By BRIAN WASUNA December 24th, 2013 1 min read

University Basketball League title sponsors Zuku will expand the championship next season.

Fifty-eight teams competed last season and Zuku plans to increase the number to 76.

University of Nairobi Terrorists won the men’s title while USIU Flames clinched the women’s crown.

“We left out many teams especially in the Western and Rift Valley conferences. We did not expect such a positive response. The teams will get a chance in next year’s edition,” says Zuku Head of Sports Gary Rathbone.

He says the league would start in September and run through to April 2015, in a bid to harmonise the fixtures with all university schedules.

“We are also planning to have All Star teams formed at the end of next season to face their counterparts from Uganda and other countries. Our goal is to improve basketball standards and have a Kenyan team compete in the 2015 World University games in Korea,” he adds.
