Don’t panic! Wycliffe Oparanya reacts after his Facebook account is hacked

The official Facebook account of the outgoing Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya was on the morning of Monday, August 29, 2022, hacked by unknown people who asked locals to vote for Mr Cleophas Malala as the governor.

The post attracted many reactions since Mr Oparanya who has served for two terms is a Deputy Party leader Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) whilst Mr Malala who is the Kakamega County Outgoing Senator is a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

In a statement on his official Twitter account, Mr Oparanya said that already the matter was being handled by sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

“This is to notify the general public that my Facebook page has been hacked by agents of doom. Ignore any post on my Facebook page as we await DCI-Kenya to handle the matter and restore it. Thank you,” the statement read in part.

The ODM director of communication, Philip Etale, also put out a statement asking Azimio members not to panic.

It read: “This is to notify members of the public and particularly online users that the official Facebook page of the Governor of Kakamega and ODM Deputy Party Leader Hon. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya has been hacked by unknown people.”

Adding, “In view of the above, we wish to warn members of the public not to fall prey to any mischievous post(s) put on the page/account this morning. The county media team is handling the matter to reclaim the ownership of the page.”

Adding, “We appeal to party members and supporters of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Movement in Kakamega County not to panic and continue to turn out in large numbers to vote for the ODM candidate Eng. Fernandes Baraza.”

The ODM party is led by Mr Raila Odinga who was the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate in the August 9, 2022, General election while UDA is led by President-elect William Ruto.

Polling is currently underway in Mombasa and Kakamega counties where residents are voting to elect their governors after the exercise was postponed during the August 9, general election.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) opened polling stations across the two counties at 6 AM with voters streaming in to cast their votes.

Security has been beefed up to ensure a smooth process with some polling stations recording a very low turnout of voters.
