National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has joined other leaders from the East African Community (EAC) member states in South Sudan for the East African Speakers’ Bureau Conference.

The conference aims to broaden the region’s outlook and foster collaboration among the EAC member states as they navigate the path toward greater integration.

Key topics on the agenda include legislative frameworks, regional cooperation, and strategies for advancing the collective goals of the East African Community.

“I am happy to be back here in Juba. South Sudan is my second home so this conference is like a homecoming event for me. The conference is very important for the region’s progress and the choice of Juba as its venue is significant for all the seven Member States as it will provide an important forum for us to chart ways of enhancing the role of the respective National Legislatures within the EAC. The conference will broaden the region’s outlook as the journey towards integration takes shape,” he said.

Wetang’ula joins speakers from the other six partner states for the Annual Conference that will be held today.

Upon touching down, Wetang’ula was received by the Kenyan Ambassador to South Sudan Retired Maj. Gen. Samuel Nandwa, South Sudan National Assembly Deputy Speaker Oyet Nathaniel Pierino, and several local Members of Parliament.

The Speaker was accompanied by Nominated Senator Veronica Maina who will represent Senate Speaker Amason Kingi in the conference.

“I am happy to be back here in Juba. South Sudan is my second home so this is a homecoming for me,” Wetang’ula said.

“The meeting ahead of us as Speakers of the National Legislatures of the EAC is very important and the choice of Juba as a venue for the conference is significant.”

He added that top on the agenda of the meeting would be integration among the seven Member States.

“The meeting will provide an important platform for us to chart ways of enhancing the role of the respective National Legislatures in the EAC,” he explained.

The EAC Speakers’ Bureau was established in 2008 with a mandate to come up with a functional working relationship between the Speakers of the partner States.

The meeting comes a day after Clerks of national assemblies of East African Community partner States and EALA met at the same venue for their 17th annual meeting.
