EACC tried to lecture Kenyans on electing upright leaders, big mistake
The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission’s attempt to lecture Kenyans on integrity turned sour on Thursday as social media users fired back with bitter criticism.
The commission, through its Twitter account, had blamed voters for electing corrupt leaders.
It also implied that the election of leaders with questionable integrity is undermining the fight against corruption.
Kenyans on Twitter were unforgiving and accused the commission of resorting to blame after failing on its job.
Users put the commission to task for clearing corrupt people to vie for public office.
EACC quickly defined its mandate as issuing recommendations to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) which then clears candidates to vie.
Kenyans were unconvinced by the answer and enquired on why EACC’s recommendations on such candidates have never been made public to empower voters make informed choices.
EACC had no explanation for that.
Here is how the discussion went.
When you elect leaders who lack integrity, you undermine the fight against corruption and unethical conduct, because you are entrusting your resources to questionable characters. Make a positive choice and change today.

Who cleared them to run for office? Why are you shooting your self on the foot? Constitutionally I thought you were mandated to do the vetting. You need to be disbanded like yesterday
— Bonareri Moke Mat (@moke_mat) June 7, 2018
We do not clear anyone to run for office. We make recommendations to the relevant agencies. it’s up to them to decide what to do with the recommendations made.

What is the name of that document we are required to produce when going for job interviews? Isn’t it called EACC CLEARance Certificate?
— Jah_K’Orando (@Collo10_Cfc) June 7, 2018
its a Self Declaration Form.
— EACC (@EACCKenya) June 7, 2018
Dear @EACCKenya can your reports that you give to the relevant agencies all be made public especially the ones on currently elected officials?
— Mariga W Thoithi (@MarigaWangombe) June 7, 2018
Irony. Of course they won’t publish. So quick to disassociate themselves from having anything to do with clearance without referring us to a document on recommendations. Half-assed as always ?

Soon @EACCKenya will be made irrelevant. The NIS is doing the job you should have done long time ago. If you don’t clear anyone, do you make these recommendations public?

This is so low of you…. After you fail to investigate and prosecute corrupt leaders, you push the blame to wananchi. We have laws and you cannot subject someone to court of public opinions, if they were corrupt you should have provided that evidence…
