Government bars long-distance trucks from Eldoret town

The government has announced plans to bar long-distance trucks from accessing Eldoret town’s Central Business District (CBD).

The trucks will instead be compelled to use the new bypass in a bid to decongest traffic from town.

The move was confirmed by Turbo county deputy county commissioner Mohammed Mwabudzo.

He explained that despite the completion of the bypass connecting Cheplaskei-Kapseret-Maili Tisa, the trucks still pass through the middle of town.

Daniel Komen, a resident of the town, also explained that the trucks had brought congestion in the CBD.

“We want the trucks to use the new bypass so that we can reduce congestion within the town,” observed Komen.

Komen, also a renowned athlete, spoke during a conference that brought together investors, plus national and county officials.

Eldoret town is gearing up for the elevation as a city.

Already, a committee formed to look into the conferment of city status is set to hand over its report within the next two weeks.

Mwabudzo stressed that he will fast-track enforcement to ensure that trucks use the southern bypass.

He said that the Kenya Revenue Authority has issued guidelines on the use of the new Southern bypass

“The concern has been enforcement. We are going to enforce movement of the trucks from passing through the middle of the town so that they use the new bypass,” said the administrator during the investment conference.

Mr Mwabudzo disclosed that the government will soon construct the Northern By-pass that will pass through Cheptiret-Moiben-Moi-Bridge.

Eldoret town municipal manager Tito Koiyet also confirmed plans to have trucks use the bypass to decongest the town.

The project, launched by former president Uhuru Kenyatta on 1, August 2017, is aimed at reducing the traffic snarl up in Eldoret town.

The town has been witnessing serious traffic snarl-ups on the road connecting the North Rift region to the neighboring countries such as Uganda, South Sudan, and Rwanda.

The Uasin Gishu County government has been upgrading the roads and other infrastructural development within the town to meet the requisite conditions set for it to attain city status.
