Police warn on return of ‘mchele’ gangs to city clubs

Police have issued a warning on the return of gangs that spike drinks before stealing from revelers in Nairobi and other major towns.

Police say the gangs have devised new methods of stupefying victims and has called for vigilance this festive season.

According to police, the criminals now collude with rogue bartenders.

They purchase drugs from chemists without a prescription and use them to stupefy unsuspecting revelers.

The most used drugs are Stilnox 10 mg tablets which are being sold at Sh480 in local chemists.

It’s generic version, Nirest or Zolpidem, goes for as little as Sh10 and Sh20 per tablet.

Head of Anti-Narcotic Police Unit Hamisi Masa advised revelers to be alert when partying.

“The criminals pretend to start a conversation with a targeted reveler before lacing their drink with a drug,” said Mr Masa.
