Uasin Gishu County has been feted for its strides in education, health, and infrastructural development.

The county was awarded the County and Town Excellence award, for the great milestones made in the education, health, and infrastructure sectors.

The awards were spearheaded by the Town and County Planners Association and were presented during the 2023 Town and County Planning Development Conference held in Eldoret town, which brought together various stakeholders in the country.

Uasin Gishu County Governor Jonathan Bii appreciated the association for recognizing the efforts made by the devolved unit as Eldoret municipality gears for the city status.

“This award also recognizes our proficient management of Eldoret municipality, setting the stage for our planned elevation to city status,” noted the county boss.

The Eldoret Municipality was also awarded the excellence award, recognizing the achievements in providing ample road infrastructure, establishing an effective emergency response system, offering quality healthcare facilities, and hosting one of the nation’s largest airports, Eldoret International Airport.

Eldoret town boasts iconic and landmark buildings that include the Barngetuny Plaza, Kiptagich, KVDA, and Daima Plaza, among others.

The town is also the fifth largest town in the country after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru cities and serves as an artery linking Kenya to East African countries such as Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.

The urban center is also one of the country’s traditional food baskets that produce maize wheat and other crops. Its economy is reliant on agricultural activities.

A Senate Committee on Devolution in its report recommended the elevation of the Eldoret town upon the approval of the entire senate, then President William Ruto will have a final word on its approval.

The head of state also hails from the county that served as his political springboard to national politics. He served as the Eldoret North MP from 1997 until 2013 when he together with the former President Uhuru Kenyatta won the presidency.

The town has also produced some of the finest athletes that have shined in international competitions.
