Ababu Namwamba appoints Charles Gacheru WRC Safari Rally CEO
Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has appointed Charles Gacheru as the WRC Safari Rally Kenya Chief Executive.
A gazette notice issued on February 16, 2024, indicated that Gacheru will serve in the role for three years.
The CS also named the Oversight Team for WRC which he will chair.
Other members are Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum, who will serve as the vice-chairman, plus representatives from the State Department for Tourism and the Kenya Motorsport Federation (KSMF) alongside KCB Group Chief Executive Paul Russo, plus Caroline Gatimu, Safina Khan, Isaac Melly and Maurice Chetambe.
Besides performing the role of the CEO, Gacheru, a renowned Public Relations Guru, will also serve as the Secretary to the Oversight Team of the Safari Rally Project.
Gacheru is a seasoned Sports Organiser and is the founder and MD of IMG Kenya, Kenya’s leading sports agency with nearly 20 years of experience.
Among the events he has been involved in down the years include several Olympic and Commonwealth games, and local and international golf tournaments including the Magical Kenya Ladies Open, the Magical Kenya Open, the Karen Masters, and many amateur golf series across East Africa.
Gacheru has also been involved in the Safari Sevens Rugby Championship and the Sevens Circuit and in football he currently wears the hat of Chairman of Tusker FC, a Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League club.
Through his company, Gacheru manages the entire sports portfolios for KCB Bank and Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) across Rally, Golf, Rugby, Football, Chess, Volleyball.
In his younger days, Gacheru played Badminton for Kenya, donning the national colors at the young age of 16 years whilst still a student at Mangu High School.
He is an avid golfer and a past golf columnist with the Business Daily newspaper for over 10 years.
Safari Rally, a sport that includes the racing of cars by renowned drivers across the country, is among the popular events in the country. It is known to produce a mix between sports and marketing the country on the tourism scope.
