Tafuta kwingine! Soy MP David Kiplagat rejects bursary requests from ‘outsiders’
Hundreds of students students from needy families in Soy constituency, Uasin Gishu County have been denied a right to benefit from Sh7 million worth of bursaries due to the supposed sins committed by their parents during the electoral season.
Soy MP David Kiplagat has vowed not to consider the students whose parents registered as voters but cast their votes in the neighbouring Likuyani constituency during the 2022 general election.
The former Uasin Gishu County assembly speaker boldly told parents and guardians of the affected learners to instead seek financial help for the children in Likuyani.
“Let me make it clear that none of the needy students from my constituency whose parents or guardians voted in the Likuyani constituency will benefit from our bursary fund allocation,” said Mr Kiplagat.
Speaking at Soy NG_constituency Development office in Eldoret town on Wednesday during the disbursement of a sh7 million cheque to help students from vulnerable families to further their education across the 5 wards, the MP said through his IT expert he positively discovered that parents of affected students casted their votes in Likuyani.
Mr Kiplagat a first time MP who is commonly known as DK, said parents who do not register as voters in his constituency will deny their children a right to benefit from the bursaries under the Constituency Development Fund.
“Some parents are crying over this decision that is not of our own but theirs. Mine is only to sympathise with the plight of their children but if they want a bursary for their children, they should go and get it where they vote every election,” added Kiplagat.
Mr Kiplagat said that with his knowledge in IT, he went to the IEBC office in Soy constituency to check if the majority of parents applying for bursary for their children are eligible voters in his area.
However, to his dismay and shock, he discovered that scores of them were residents of Soy but registered as voters in Likuyani constituency Kakamega County.
He said that the lesson he learned after going through the IEBC portal has forced him to ensure that only vulnerable students whose parents are eligible voters in his area benefit from the bursary allocation.
