City Hall pulls down billboards over Sh53m unpaid rates
Nairobi County government on Wednesday pulled down billboards in the city centre over unpaid rates by outdoor advertising firms.
City Hall said the firms owe it a total of Sh52.7 million in unpaid rates.
The advertising firms had last year September been handed a reprieve by a court that barred City Hall from pulling down the billboards pending the determination of a suit that arose from a dispute on the payments of the rates.
City Hall’s debt collection task force, headed by, John Ntoiti, said that the county is missing out about Sh 1 billion in revenue due to unauthorised outdoor advertising.
Wednesday’s operation was conducted on Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue, Westlands, Landhies road and Ngong road.
Tides Company had its billboards on Moi Avenue pulled down over a debt of Sh272,000.
According to City Hall, Miteh Design Media owes it Sh356,000, Supreme Outdoor owes Sh1.8 million, Spellman Outdoor owes Sh1.8 million, Media Quest owes 1 million and Ingenius Communications owes Sh 3.6 million.
