Sofapaka gets bye in GOtv Shield

GOtv Shield holders Sofapaka have been handed bye to round two of the knockout competition that begins this weekend following the withdrawal of their would be opponents Nakuru All Stars due to financial challenges.

Mathare United have likewise pulled out of the tournament which regardless will kick off with four matches this weekend.

At the same time, Sofapaka skipper John Baraza, says the team is ready to fight for the defence of the title.

In last year’s finals, Sofapaka edged out Posta Rangers 2-1 in a closely fought match at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, but Baraza says they want nothing short of the crown.

PLAYERS’ DEPARTURE

“Although the cup game comes during the KPL mid-season break, our aim is to retain the title. That is what everybody in the dressing room wants and we intend to give it our best shot,” Baraza said.

Batoto ba Mungu have lost four key players in the current transfer window in Enoch Agwanda who decamped to league champions Gor Mahia, Elli Asieche (KCB), Danson Kago (Tusker) and deadly goal predator Abdoul Fiston, who has joined South African top tier side Malemodi Sundown and Baraza admits the departure of the four is a big loss.

“I didn’t like their departure. They were key pillars of the team, and we knew what they brought to the team. But again that is the nature of football and we just have to soldier on,” he said.
