Ruto’s stadium pledge at Kiptum’s send-off
President William Ruto says his government has laid elaborate plans to build and refurbish stadiums in the country.
He spoke in Elgeyo Marakwet county at the burial service of fallen athlete Kelvin Kiptum.
“The sports ministry led by Ababu Namwamba is leading the initiative to ensure we have enough quality sports infrastructure. It is part of the plan. We have funds set aside for that,” said the Head of State.
Earlier, Keiyo South lawmaker Gideon Kimaiyo urged the government to construct a stadium in the constituency and name the facility after the late World Marathon record holder, Kelvin Kiptum.
Mr Kimaiyo, a close ally of President Ruto, argued the area can produce several other world-class talents.
Also present at the event was Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba, his Transport counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen, alongside other prominent government officials.
Kimaiyo emphasised that constructing a stadium named after Kiptum would be a befitting tribute to acknowledge his contribution to showcasing Kenya to the world through athletics.
“The athletics community feels neglected by the government; it has not supported them. Kiptum hailed from this region (Keiyo South), and they are appealing for the construction of a stadium in his honor. It should be built right here in Chepkorio ward,” the MP implored President Ruto.
Jane Chebaibai, the area Woman Representative, also endorsed the request.
“I convened a gathering with all athletes from my constituency, and Kiptum was among them. Sports CS Ababu Namwamba was scheduled to meet them this February, but unfortunately, we lost one of our own. Nevertheless, he remains committed to hearing their grievances,” added Kimaiyo.
Kiptum’s untimely demise on February 11, 2024, along the Kaptagat – Eldoret road, alongside his coach Gervais Hakizimana, a Rwandese national, left the nation in mourning.
The fatal accident occurred while Kiptum was driving, resulting in the tragic loss of both individuals.
