Safaricom dismisses M-Pesa ‘shut down’ claims


Telecommunication Company Safaricom has dismissed claims circulating on social media that there will be an M-Pesa shut down this weekend resulting in interruption of its services.

The message circulating online warns Safaricom subscribers of the impending shut down of M-Pesa services effective on Saturday July, 8 to Sunday July, 9 as it transfers its servers from Germany to Kenya.

“Starting Saturday the entire system will shut down and sending or receiving money will not be possible. Customers will not be able to pay their weekend bills in restaurants, supermarkets, petrol stations and pubs over the weekend,” read part of the viral message.

But in a statement, Safaricom clarified that the third and final upgrade of the money transfer system is scheduled to take place starting Saturday July, 15 from 10pm to Sunday July 16 9am, which will impact the availability of all M-Pesa services.

“The third and final upgrade will take place on the 15th to 16th of July. This final upgrade process will result in a new modern M-Pesa platform with increased functionality which will be rolled out to enhance the M-Pesa experience for our customers and partner,” Safaricom’s said in the statement.
