By HILARY KIMUYU January 24th, 2018 1 min read

Police in Nairobi on Tuesday shot and killed three suspected gangsters in separate incidents as the authorities intensify the fight against crime in the city.

One suspect was killed at an apartment off Thika Road, behind Thika Road Mall following a botched robbery.

The gang had raided an apartment and stole from cars parked in the compound.

A victim narrated how he unknowingly opened the gate for one of the suspects pretending to a resident.

The suspect later let in his accomplices who broke into several cars and stole what they could manage before police arrived at the scene and shot one of them dead. The other gang members fled.

In other incidents, a suspect was killed in Industrial Area and another one in Tassia area.

SHOOTING INCIDENTS

According to police report, the slain suspects had been attacking and robbing area residents who raised the alarm.

The latest shooting incidents brought to five the number of suspects killed on Tuesday in separate incidents in the city.

Two had been shot dead near Railways area and one at Globe Cinema.

Police say they have mounted operations to rid the streets of Nairobi of muggers.

There are also indications that the new head of DCI George Kinoti has formed a team of detectives, mostly drawn from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit and Flying Squad, to crack down on conmen and organised criminal gangs.

Mr Kinoti and Nairobi DCI chief Nicholas Kamwende have held three meetings with the new team to come up with plans to counter the crime wave.
