Police in Kiambu are investigating an incident where a baby was abandoned near a riverbed.

A police report indicates a passerby informed them he heard a baby cry found the newborn in a bag.

The baby did not have clothes on. It still had a fresh cut on the umbilical cord.

“There were bloodstains at the scene where the baby girl was found. It is then that the passerby called out for help and rushed the baby to Wangige hospital where officials said she was in good condition,” a statement by the police said.

The infant was taken to undergo a medical check-up at the Makimel Children’s Home.

Meanwhile, police are questioning a couple whose one-year-old baby died while they were not in the house.

In the incident which occurred on September 11, 2023, in Kiambu , the girl was in the company of her older sister aged 4.

Police said a fire raged through the four-roomed timber-made structure killing the child as her sister ran out to safety.

The children’s parents were not at home at the time of the incident and arrived to find the tragedy.

Police said they are yet to establish the cause of the fire.

The remains were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and probe.

Locals said that efforts to put off the fire did not bear any fruits as it was spread quickly.

“We asked the elder sister where the baby was and she told us inside the house, people really tried to save her but it was not possible,” Ms Mary Kimani said.

Another local, Abraham Karanja said that the fire was spreading very first and it became futile to put it off.
