Back to sender: German Ambassador to Zambia returns CEO’s gift box

By Winnie Onyando December 15th, 2023 2 min read

German Ambassador to Zambia Anne Wagner-Mitchell has returned a gift box she received from a chief executive officer of a Zambian company.

Writing on her social media page, the ambassador said her decision was based on a commitment to uphold integrity and the responsibilities of her position.

“As a public official, I must avoid even the appearance of personal gain or being influenced in my official duties. Christmas cards, but gifts of more than nominal value: Return to sender,” she said on her X-page.

In a stern warning to the CEO, the ambassador stressed that no gifts should be sent in the future.
The returned package reportedly contained items such as a power bank, a flash drive and a thermos with a digital temperature display.

“Please do not send me any more gifts in the future. I am sure the money spent on these gifts would be greatly appreciated as a donation to a charitable organisation that cares for the most vulnerable and poor in Zambian society,” read part of the letter signed by Wagner.

The ambassador’s decision reflects the strict ethical guidelines often followed by public officials, particularly in diplomatic circles. The principle behind this practice is to maintain impartiality and avoid any perception of impropriety or favouritism.

Kenyans on X shared different opinions on the matter, with some congratulating the ambassador for maintaining her integrity and shunning corruption.

Below are some of the responses;

“Yes, the anti-corruption laws in Germany are very clear on this. Not only civil servants, but also private citizens employed by private companies have to abide by them. Companies always give a guideline as to how much the gift should cost. You can’t go beyond that. In two companies I used to work for, the limit was 20-30 euros. Well done Ms Ambassador,” commented one X user.

Another said: “Your last sentence sounded condescending though. It took away the very important message you were trying to get across!”

“Don’t be confused, corruption exists there too. It just looks and smells different. Subtle and hidden.”
