Beyonce to sue Kenyan newspaper for claiming she’s broke

Mombasa – based events promoter Julia Achieng, better known as Beyoncé, is suing a local newspaper for defamation over a story that claimed she is broke.

The newspaper’s carried a story that claimed Beyoncé’s valuables were auctioned to recover rent arrears amounting to Sh 99,000.

The story quoted Mombasa property owner Marion Chebet, who claimed Beyoncé had lived in her house in Kiembeni without paying rent for five months.

The landlady claimed she got a court order that permitted the auction of Beyoncé’s valuables.

She said the auctioneers only got Sh8,000 because the former model had reportedly vacated the house by the time of the auction.

But speaking to Nairobi News, the former Miss Mombasa who also runs Beyoncé Promotions Company says  the story has damaged her reputation, was done out of malice and the reporter did not seek for her comment.

Beyoncé, in our interview,  said she was never auctioned as reported and is still a tenant at the premise.

“What’s with all this nonsense, this story is all full of lies. I still live in the house and not a single belonging has been auctioned as reported.

“My reputation has been compromised and I am suing the newspaper for defamation because I wasn’t even consulted for my views on the matter. I have already furnished my lawyer with all the documentation and all am waiting is to square this in court,” an angry Beyoncé said.

According to Beyoncé, the bone of contention with her landlady Chebet is an increase of rent from Sh 17,000 to Sh22, 000.

“As we speak, I have a case that I filed against Chebet that is set to be mentioned on 19th May 2015. I took her to court after she breached our earlier agreement, three months after I rented the house back in November last year,” She explained.
