Bunge la Mwananchi president Francis Awino fingers Sakaja over flooding

Bunge la Mwananchi President Francis Awino has strongly criticised Governor Johnson Sakaja’s “Inawork” (it is working) slogan, arguing instead that the county boss has struggled to deliver services to residents.

In an interview with Nairobi News, Awino asserted that the situation in Nairobi is dire, with floods wreaking havoc leaving many residents displaced and in distress.

Awino emphasised the failure of governance, stating, “there is nothing working in Nairobi. Many lives and properties are being lost, and Sakaja has failed the people.”

He criticised the county government for its apparent lack of preparedness in addressing the recurring issue of floods, suggesting that proactive measures were sorely lacking.

“The county government has not implemented adequate measures to mitigate the impact of floods,” Awino lamented.

He underscored the need for a robust disaster management strategy, calling on the national government to step in with effective intervention measures.

However, during an interview with NTV yesterday, Sakaja maintained that his government is doing all it can to deal with the flood menace in the county.

“We are doing our best and I believe inawork,” Sakaja said.

More than 70 people have died, and more than 130,000 people have been affected by floods across the country since the onset of the rains, according to official government records.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also announced that 22 people were injured and eight are missing.

Nairobi leads with the number of casualties at 32, followed by Rift Valley (15).

Western and Eastern regions have recorded six deaths each, with Central recording three and Coast two. North Eastern has none.

As the Meteorological department warned that heavy rainfall will continue through to the weekend, the DP asked county governments to reconsider adjusting their budgets and prioritise disaster mitigation programmes.

“We are in discussions with the National Treasury and in a bid to put up Sh4 billion emergency fund,” said Gachagua.
