Buruburu bar owner arrested over wife’s murder

December 12th, 2014 2 min read

Buruburu Police are holding the owner of a popular bar who is suspected to have murdered his second wife in the wee hours on Friday morning.

Mr Erastus Odhiambo is suspected to have hit his 27-year-old wife, Linda Wanjiku’s head with a gun before kicking her severally leading to her death at their house in Buruburu Phase Five Extension.

Witnesses said Mr Odhiambo arrived home early Friday morning and found that his wife was not at home. He went out again only to return and find his wife was back. That is when all hell broke loose.

“They started quarrelling and then at around 4:30 in the morning, my sister decided to leave for our parent’s home in Phase Two, but when my sister had just started driving the car away, her husband caught up with us, opened the car door and pulled her out,” Linda’s sister, Dianna Irungu said.

After pulling her sister out of the car, she alleged, Mr Odhiambo, who is a licensed firearm owner pulled his gun and hit her at the back of her head severally, sending her tumbling to the ground.

“As she lay on the ground just outside the gate to their house, he kept kicking her and even fired at her despite my constant pleas that he lets her go. I called my brothers when he did not stop assaulting her,” she said.

GUNSHOT

Neighbours said they heard a gunshot and when they came out, they found Linda lying unconscious on the ground.

“I then saw Linda’s sister screaming before her father and brother arrived and tried to lift her into the car, but her husband kept on blocking them and asking them to leave her alone,” a neigbour, Hellen Wesonga said.

Some neighbors helped Linda’s father and brother to lift her into their car and rushed her to Jamaa Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“I arrived at the scene when my sister was already unconscious and we opted to take her to the nearest hospital for first aid but  unfortunately she died,” Linda’s brother, Renson Karanja said.

At around 10 am on Friday, officers from the Buruburu Division’s Derectorate of Criminal Investigations picked Mr Odhiambo from his house and took him to Buruburu Police Station for questioning.

POLICE INVESTIGATIONS

Buruburu OCPD Richard Kerich said police were yet to establish what happened and that investigations into death had commenced.

It is not clear what drove the couple to quarrel, but Dianna, who has been living with the couple, said they had been having differences on several occasions but have always opted to solve them out of court.

Linda, a lawyer, who has been working at an investment company, was Mr Odhiambo’s second wife with whom they have a one-year-old-son.

Her mother, Anita Irungu, said her daughter was preparing for her birthday that was to be held next week.

“She was a very humble girl and she always chose to stay out of trouble. She was my second born child and was very responsible,” Mrs Irungu, who at the time of going to press was taking care of Linda’s baby, said.

On Thursday night just hours before her death, Linda had posted on her Facebook page, “Happy ‘Thursfriday’ to y’all, catch you later my pals.”
