Commuters stranded as Umoja matatus block roads to protest registration of rival sacco
Commuters were left stranded on Thursday morning after matatus plying the City Center-Umoja route blocked the busy Outer Ring Road.
The matatu’s from three saccos that operate in the route were protesting the registration on a new rival sacco.
The new sacco, Risen Limited, on Wednesday got a court order to operate after its TLB licence was revoked for contravening sacco rules.
According to the owners of Utimo Sacco, Umoinner Sacco and City Tram, the new sacco was given a licence to operate between Nairobi’s CBD, Umoja and Komarock which they said is against the set sacco rules.
ROADS BLOCKED
The matatu operators also claim that a sacco should only operate between two set destinations and not three.
The matatus blocked other motorists who were unable to access Mayanja Road to Donholm as Police stood there helplessly. They also blocked Ronald Ngala and Mfangano Streets in the CBD.
The strike forced commuters from Umoja and Tena estates to walk as far as Buru buru and Donholm to get transport.
