There was drama on January 27, 2024, when detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested a Kasarani-based police officer for soliciting a Sh30,000 bribe from a complainant.

Paul Kamau Mbugua was arrested at a liquor store along Lumumba Drive for demanding a bribe to release two brothers he had wrongfully arrested and detained at Kasarani Police Station.

According to EACC, Mbugua, did not record the brothers’ alleged offences in the station’s occurrence book (OB).

“The Commission received the complaint and conducted investigations leading to the officer’s arrest after receiving the demanded amount,” the anti-graft agency said.

A Taurus revolver pistol and ammunition were confiscated and handed over to the OCS EACC police station.

“Detectives confiscated the suspect’s Taurus Revolver Pistol S/No. Q130360 and ammunition, which they later handed over to the OCS EACC Police Station.”

During the arrest, a minor scuffle is said to have ensued with the officer wailing “uncontrollably” as he attempted to resist.

“The suspect was escorted to Kilimani Police Station where he is currently detained pending further processing at EACC Integrity Centre Police Station,” it added.

The arrest of the cop comes in the wake of an increase in such cases of extortion amidst the runaway corruption in the police service.

In July, 2023, an Inspector of Police who received the Sh10,000 bribe from the complainant in April 2021 via Mpesa was charged before the Anti-Corruption Court in Milimani.

Inspector Susan Wambui Muiruri who was in-charge of Zimmerman Police Post was charged with soliciting and receiving a bribe of Sh10,000 from the complainant, when she served at Kasarani Police Station, in order to facilitate the release of his girlfriend who had been arrested and held there.

The suspect also said the demanded bribe was a fee to facilitate ‘erasing’ particulars of the arrested person from the “digital OB.”

According to the EACC, the suspect received the Sh10,000 bribe from the complainant on April 25, 2021 via Mpesa.
