Court detains policemen linked to botched forex bureau robbery

Four police officers linked to a Sh2 million botched robbery at a Nairobi-based forex bureau will remain in custody for another night pending a determination on whether or not charges will be preferred against them.

Milimani senior principal magistrate Benard Ochoi ruled the suspects will likely interfere with witnesses if released before the end of investigations.

“The complainant’s business premises is known to the accused persons and chances are they will interfere with investigations if released,” ruled Ochoi.

The four suspects were arrested after what police say was a botched robbery mission.

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had asked court to detain the officers for a week.

The four namely Daniel Wambui, Eliud Kipkurui, Stanley Gitonga and Nicholas Murira were arrested on January 9, 2023,

The prosecution told court the investigation officers need time to piece together all information relating to an attempt to steal Sh2.5 million from a Nairobi businessman.

Preliminary investigations indicate officers at the Nairobi Area police station received a tip that robbers had confronted a businessman Hassan Abdi who manages a forex bureau in Nairobi.

Abdi had just withdrawn cash from Absa bank Queensway branch.

Police pursued the suspects and arrested them along Kiambu road.

They were booked at Central Police station.
