Dagoretti South MP, KJ urges parents to monitor children’s use of social media
Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie, popularly known as KJ, has urged parents in Kamukunji constituency to nurture the talents of young people.
KJ was among the leaders present at the Kamukunji Scholarship distribution where 9,848 students received a total of Sh61 million in educational support from the Kamukunji Constituency National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) on Saturday, May 4.
The MP stressed the importance of parents taking an active role in their children’s education and controlling the amount of time children spend on social media.
“It is not the government or the MP who will control the time your children spend on social media, you have to be keen,” said Mr Kiarie.
He also encouraged parents to support their children’s interests, whether in sports or other creative endeavours.
“Those with football talent should pursue football and those inclined towards production should be encouraged to pursue that,” he said, advocating a personalised approach to education.

Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan has supported more than 53,000 students through scholarships.
Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony held at Eastleigh High School grounds, the MP expressed the hope that all students who receive the cheque will strive for excellence in their studies.
“I hope that those who receive these cheques will dedicate themselves to their studies, work hard and complete their education,” Yusuf said.
The MP also appealed to the government to reconsider the demolition of earmarked buildings and structures near Nairobi’s rivers.
He argued that the current requirement of 30 metres from riparian land was too large, equating it to the whole of Gikomba, which is a densely populated area.
“Thirty metres is too big, 30 metres is like the whole of Gikomba and Kitui village which has a huge population,” he noted.
Others who attended the function included Wajir East MP Adan Daud and Kamukunji Deputy County Commissioner James Kamau.
The scholarship distribution continued on May 6 at the California Ajira Centre.
On May 3, President William Ruto ordered the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of all schools until further notice.
